day of music shows, alleys & harpoons (thanks cross-pollination!)

yesterday, i saw five music sets in about as many hours - it is the season here in nyc. first up: bluesman and silver fox john hammond in an amplified alley

then i got to see pearl and the beard (no photo), which was a nice start for the *243rd* cross-pollination show that this fella jay and his partner do (i remember jay because of his hat and he lived in my hometown of lawrence, kansas when he went to ku. righteous.

now, anni rossi is.simply.awesome. she can wail on the viola and via her voicebox, drummer anchored the sound and was a perfect enhancement to her sound. see her if you can (she's on tour).

and then ezra furman and the harpoons. rumor has it they are the next big thing and i can see it (not just because of the four people filming the show and five photographers documenting his second-to-last show as part of his residency at pianos. great show and i will be there next tuesday...you should too!

nyc transit alert: rodenticide!

rats are as much a part of nyc as times square; but, this is the first time i saw this notification for the batting with rodenticide - one day after tax day. fitting.

pine box boys play at la's fantastic pirate bar

i'm a pirate, at least much more than an ninja - though i like kimonos. la has secrets and if you're quite and wait for the asphalt to speak, it will guide you to fantabulous destinations - like the redwood bar! I heard a few awesome acts (pine box boys and groovy rednecks), had lots of whiskey and watched two people flirt from a distance and go home alone. I regret not making the intervention...

how rad is this guy?!

i met elvis' third cousin on sunset in la as i was walking through some absurdly hot, stale air. clearly, he caught my eye, played me a song and winked at me. twice.
